Stefanie Hellweg has been professor for Ecological Systems Design at the Institute of Environmental Engineering in the Department Civil, Environmental, and Geomatic Engineering since 2006.
She was born in Essen (Germany) in 1971 and studied industrial engineering at Karlsruhe University. After graduating in 1996, she worked as a management consultant on projects in the field of waste management and energy production. From 1997 to 2000 she completed her Ph.D. on the environmental assessment of thermal waste treatment processes at ETH Zurich. From 2001 to 2002 she worked as a post-doc in a joint project between PSI and ETH on sustainable waste management. In 2003 she became a senior research fellow at the Institute for Chemical and Bioengineering at ETH Zurich where she lead several projects on the environmental assessment of chemical products and processes, the treatment of waste and wastewaters from the chemical industry, and chemical exposure at the workplace. Between 2004 and 2005 she was a visiting scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in the US. During her career, Stefanie Hellweg has received several scholarships, including grants from the German Government and the Swiss National Science Foundation.
In her current research, Stefanie Hellweg works on modeling, evaluating and improving the environmental impact of products, technologies and consumption patterns. In particular, she is developing and applying methods for Life Cycle Assessment and industrial ecology. Besides her research activities, she serves on several academic steering and advisory committees as well as editorial boards. Since 2011 she is member of the National Research Council of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNF) and Director of Studies of the Environmental Engineering Program at ETH.
