Im Forschungsbericht der ETH wird die Professur Grundwasser und Hydromechanik wie folgt beschrieben: The Hydromechanics Group carries out basic and applied research in environmental fluid mechanics. Subjects are among others * Flow and transport processes in aquifers including chemical reactions, density effects, and two phase flow. Applications are aimed at the remediation of polluted soils and aquifers, the safe underground storage of hazardous and radioactive wastes, and the protection and sustainable management of groundwater resources both with respect to quantity and quality. * Turbulence and the mechanisms of transport and mixing in surface water systems. These processes are studied in the laboratory and in the field. The methods used include visualization techniques such as PIV, PTV, and LIF in connection with image processing. * Numerical methods for the solution of flow and transport equations. For field studies capabilities of simulation using numerical models are required. In connection with these the problem of upscaling from laboratory to the field scale is also treated, as well as general stochastic simulation methods which allow to quantify the uncertainty of models. |
