Research

Aortic aneurysms are one of the leading causes of death all around the world. Hence, there is a strong interest in the analysis of aortic flows. The aorta is the largest artery leaving the heart. Turbulence and the associated increased shear stress are believed to be responsible for pathological blood flow phenomena. However, it is still unknown whether and under which circumstances aortic flow becomes turbulent.

The aim of this project is to advance the hydrodynamic understanding of aortic flow. We are studying transition from laminar to turbulent flow in an elastic and transparent anatomically accurate replica of a human aorta. For this purpose we employ the non intrusive measuring techniques; Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) and Particle Imaging Velocimetry (PIV).

Here is a movie of one of the experiments that we performed in our lab. The fluid flow inside the aorta with an ascending aortic aneurysm is shown in the video below. The displacements of the particles along the ascending aorta during a heart beat can be seen in the video.

The fluid flow inside the healthy aorta is shown in the video below. The movie was recorded with a high speed camera with a frame rate of 2000 fps. The movie is 70 times slower than the real time recording.

The third movie shows the real time measurement in the replica of a human aorta under laser light. The disorganized flow can be seen clearly. The effect of the geometric deformation is significant close to the aortic arch. The particles used in this measurement are rhodamine particles with a diameter of 200 microns.

The Hydromechanics Lab

The hydromechanics group of IfU (Institute of Environmental Engineering) focuses on experimental research in complex, e.g. turbulent flows. The main technique used in projects is three dimensional particle tracking (3D-PTV). Three-dimensional Particle Tracking Velocimetry (3D-PTV) is a flexible non-instrusive image-analysis based flow measurement technique.
