A PIV method for particle laden flows in a plane mixing layer

Observations of algae in lakes show a faster settling than can be explained by mere Stokes settling. It is suspected that demixing processes lead to higher and lower density regions which are moved as whole by buoyancy. For sediment particles introduced uniformly over time into a mixing layer the thesis showed that a modulation of the spatial density distribution occurs and that the average settling velocity is increased by up to a factor of two compared to Stokes settling. The experiment is performed by two parallel PIV systems, which are synchronized and differentiate between neutrally buoyant particles for flow tracking and heavy sediment particles by colour filters.
