Research in our group has concentrated on requiring a better understanding of the runoff formation processes on the plot scale and of procedures to upscale this knowledge to the catchment scale. The results of the runoff process research is incorporated in catchment models to make flood estimations in gauged and ungauged catchments more reliable.
The aim of my work is to improve and further develop the mapping and upscaling methodology of the dominant runoff processes and to verify it in selected test catchments. Whereas runoff processes at the plot scale can be directly monitored, the verification of the upscaling to the catchment scale is difficult and includes a subjective element. Using spatially and temporally highly resolved pesticide, nitrate and phosphorus measurements as well as interpretation of sequences of aerial photographs, the dominant runoff process maps will be verified and compared with soil maps enhanced for hydrological purposes. more information
