Dr. Hoyer is currently Senior Research Associate at the Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management. His main field of interest is the development of scanning particle tracking velocimetry. He was recipient of a Research Fellowship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) (8/95-7/96). He earned his doctorate at ETH in 1994, conducting research in drag reduction of Non-Newtonian fluids in turbulent pipe flow. He used a customized Laser Doppler Velocimetry system to measure turbulent flow velocities. During this time he was also a teaching assistant in hydraulics. He was a post graduate researcher at the Ocean Engineering Lab at UCSB from 1998-1999 where he designed, built and implemented a quasi-3D single camera particle tracking system for the orbital velocity measurements of mechanically generated modulated waves. From 1999-2000 he was an engineering specialist for the Ocean Engineering Lab at UCSB. He implemented a stereoscopic particle tracking velocimetry system for the measurement of orbital and drift velocity of the water surface for mechanically and wind generated waves. Before joining the institute he was a self employed business consultant working in California as a lead investigator for a Phase II Navy SBIR program on high alpha aerodynamics for fighter aircraft (FA 18) (2000-2003).
