The main goal of my research is a systematic study of a number of key issues regarding turbulent entrainment as a process of continuous transitions from laminar to turbulent flow through the boundary between the two coexisting regions of laminar and turbulent state. The emphasis is to be put on the large- and small-scale features of this process and the interaction between them.
The methodology is based on the novel measuring techniques developed at IFU. The existing experimental Particle Tracking Velocimetry (PTV) facilities and software will be complemented by an optical slicing device allowing for larger particle densities and larger observation windows. This method will be the basis for the proposed research. The techniques to be used can be effectively implemented in many fields where entrainment and mixing are of importance. Examples are processes with combustion, chemical or biochemical reactions.
