PMPATH for WINDOWS NT

PMPATH 95/NT is a particle tracking model running within Windows 95 or Windows NT. PMPATH retrieves groundwater models created by Processing Modflow or prepared for MODPATH (version 3.0 and later). A semi-analytical particle tracking scheme (Pollock, 1988) and the simulation result files from MODFLOW are used to calculate the groundwater paths and travel times. PMPATH graphically shows the groundwater model along with DXF-basemaps and different colored grid cells for indicating different boundary or hydraulic conditions, i.e., constant head boundary, wells, rivers, etc. Through its interactive graphical modeling environment, PMPATH allows the user to place particles and perform particle tracking with just a few mouse clicks. While most available particle tracking models, e.g., MODPATH or PATH3D, need postprocessors for the visualization of computed paths and times data, PMPATH calculates and shows the pathlines and travel time marks simultaneously. Moreover, PMPATH provides various on-screen graphical options including labelled head and drawdown contours, cross-sectional views and velocity vectors for any selected model layer and time step. Graphics output includes DXF, HPGL and BMP (Windows Bitmap) formats. As a native Windows 95/NT application, PMPATH provides an extensive Windows-Help file and supports all Windows-compatible printers and plotters. You can even preview a plot before printing it."

A postprocessor for uncertainty estimation of path lines in groundwater models

The code PPPath estimates the uncertainty of the location of path lines in a two-dimensional steady state confined or unconfined aquifer flow due to the uncertainty of the spatially variable unconditional hydraulic conductivity or transmissivity field. The method is based on the semi-analytical theory given in Stauffer et al. (2002, 2004). One application is the uncertainty estimation of the catchment of a pumping well by considering the boundary path lines starting at a stagnation point.

Transport, Biochemistry and Chemistry

TBC 2.0 is a further development of the numerical model FLOWBIO developed by René Therrien and Wolfgang Schäfer, Kassel University, March 1993. TBC is able to simulate three-dimensional saturated groundwater flow as well as transport and (bio)chemical reactions of any number of model species. The flow and transport equations are discretized by using the finite difference method, resulting in a seven-point template, or by using the Garlerkin finite element technique, resulting in a 27-point discretization molecule. The use of the seven-point template considerably reduces memory and CPU time required for a solution. The final system of equations is solved by a very fast and efficient preconditioned ORTHOMIN solver.
The biochemical reactions are described by Monod-type kinetics and the equation system is solved by a special DGEAR routine. Chemical reactions can either be defined as a set of fast equilibrium reactions or as kinetic chemical reactions. The equation system is solved by a Newton-Raphson solver.

Introduction

The three-dimensional particle tracking velocimetry (3D-PTV) is a nonintrusive measurement technique which allows for the determination of velocity and velocity derivatives in turbulent flows. It is based on the visualization of a flow seeded with small neutrally buoyant particles (flow tracers) and a stereoscopic recording image sequences of the particles. In the past decade the successful research work performed by the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry (IGP) in cooperation with the Institute of Environmental Engineering (before 01.01.06 Institute of Hydromechanics and Water Resources Management, IHW) at ETH Zurich led to an operational and reliable measurement tool used in experimental fluid mechanics.  Recently further progress has been achieved in the improvement of the existing hard- and software solutions.

Tasks

The Particle Tracking Velocimetry software performs the following tasks:

  • Calibration of the multi-camera system (determination of camera exterior and interior orientations, lens distortion and further disturbances) and the exact geometric modelling ("multimedia geometry" - each beam from a particle to the sensor passes the three optical media water, glass, air with different refractive indices, which leads to a twice broken beam).
  • Image preprocessing: perform highpass filtering due to non-uniformities in the background illumination.
  • Detect particles in the images by a modified thresholding operator, localize particles with subpixel accuracy by a centroid operator.
  • Establish stereoscopic correspondences.
  • Determine 3-D particle coordinates.
  • Storage of all relevant object and image space information.
  • Perform tracking in 2-D image and 3-D object space.

A crucial point is the handling of ambiguities occuring in different steps of image  and data processing:

  • Particles may overlap in the images. For that reason a modified thresholding/centroid operator was developed searching for local maxima in the images and dividing particle images at local minima under certain conditions.
  • Due to the fact that particle images cannot be distinguished by features like size, shape or color, the only criterion for the establishment of stereoscopic correspondences is the epipolar line. Ambiguities occur when multiple candidates are found in a search area defined by the epipolar line. These ambiguities can only be solved if a third (or even a fourth) camera is being used.
  • Ambiguities may also occur in the tracking procedure. Criteria like local correlation and smoothness of the velocity field are employed to solve these criteria.
